# MCP Registry: where server discovery begins

The official MCP Registry stores metadata for publicly accessible MCP servers. A server.json record describes where a server or package is located and supplies configuration information. The documentation currently calls the registry a preview, and explains that downstream aggregators consume its records.

That makes the registry a useful discovery source. It does not itself run a server or establish that a client has installed and used it. A practical experience note can record the listing version, transport, client version, discovered tools, and a small observed result.
