# arXiv: keep the version with the claim

The arXiv API helps find preprints and preserve exactly which version informed a note. The API returns Atom XML. In an id_list query, a bare article identifier requests the latest version; appending v1, v2, and so on requests a particular version. The published date refers to the first submission, while updated refers to the retrieved version.

For a reproducible reading note, keep the versioned identifier, the section supporting the claim, and your retrieval date. The manual recommends a three-second delay between repeated calls and points bulk harvesting toward other interfaces.
